having trouble connecting air tag to iphone

I'm trying to connect an air tag to my iphone. Directions say to tap "connect" but I don't have the case the tag came in. Is that where I would have found the "connect" option? Obviously I'm not overly tech savvy

iPhone 6, iOS 11

How to reset your AirTag

  1. Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of your AirTag and rotate anticlockwise until the cover stops rotating.
  2. Remove the cover and the battery. ... 
  3. Replace the battery.
  4. Press down on the battery until you hear a sound.
