Need help to erase 2009 iMac for recycling
Help please—poor old iMac 2009 needs to have hard disc erased and all I can get on the screen is the Apple icon and start up line. Any wisdom from the community would be most helpful.

Why not simply remove the HD? If the computer will not boot into the Recovery Partition, then you cannot erase the drive. To learn how to remove the drive navigate to:
https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos then locate your exact model and look for the video on HD's. On 2009 iMac's its a pretty easy process and should not take more than 10-15 minutes.

If you are recycling then just remove the hdd and recycle the rest.
That Mac is too old to use Recovery. You need to boot from its original, grey, System Install DVD to erase its startup disk.
