Apple ID Email address change

I am trying to change my apple ID email address to my current, but it says my email address is already in use. I don’t recall setting an apple ID up with my email address.

An address becomes “un-usable” for an AppleID if it has ever been an AppleID, a Recovery E-Mail, or a Notification E-Mail.
