in trying to dele a message I inadvertently ended up putting an icon in the side panel/bar. a) how did I do this? so I can avoid in future. b) how do I dele message on iMac? Unlike iPhone, there doesn't seem to be a way of sliding to reveal trash icon.

Use Control-click if you don't have a pointing device that can be configured for a second click.
