Safari Virus alert.

I have heard that these are scams but it said there was a "rootkit" installed on my mac. I ran a malware scan using Malwarebytes and it found nothing. Was this warning real or not?

It's a scam. A message warning of malware will only be legitimate if you manually started a scanner or uploaded a file to a website.
