I’m in a work group chat for a job I don’t work anymore. I cannot leave it apparently because there are android users in it.

That's correct. But this isn't an Apple problem. This is your carriers issue. Complain to them, as the messages are not coming via iMessage, which you could leave. They are coming vis SMS, which is solely on the carrier side.
