Using „play next“ in Apple Music has big lags over AirPlay on iOS 17

Since iOS 17, I'm once again getting terrible performance from AirPlay when I use "play next" with Apple Music. It often goes like this:

A song is playing over Airplay. I select another song to "play next" and one or all of the following things happen:

The current song immediately gets interrupted for a second before resuming

after the current song, AM starts playing the song that used to be next in the queue , before stopping it dead after 10-20 seconds and instead switching to the song I manually selected to play next. So it seems the queue doesn't get updated before the next song starts playing

often the song I select to play next doesn't get put next up in the queue but somewhere way down the queue. This seems to be a seperate issue however

Obviously, this makes for a bad performance overall, with frequent hangups and songs getting suddenly cut off. This issue used to be resolved in the last few versions of iOS 16, but for me it has come back in full force with iOS 17.

Hi ChunkfaceNelson,

With a concern such as you describe, the best option is likely a two-phase approach.

The first being to work on isolating the behavior as much as possible. As you have not provided specific software versions or devices involved in the situation, verify that all of your devices have the latest OS updates or Apple Music versions if applicable and retest if any were behind. Then continue to test using AirPlay between different devices to see if the problem only occurs in a specific pattern or combination. Confirm that wireless interference from Bluetooth or Wi-Fi are not factors as described in Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference.

After completing those tests if the behavior remains and you are not able to find a solution/common factor that can be addressed, reach out to Apple Support with the results to investigate further.

Regards.
