iCloud photo storage and Google Photos

I used to have a Google Pixel phone and my pictures were stored on Google Photos. I have since switched to the iPhone so now they get stored on iCloud. However the Google Photo app was transfered onto my iPhone and now I have both. Every time I take a picture on the iPhone it automatically saves it to Google Photos and I'm assuming it is also going to the iCloud. Last month I upgraded from iPhone 13 to iPhone 15 and everything was transferred to the new phone. But before I upgraded I downloaded all the pictures for my phone storage to my MacBook to make sure nothing got lost. My phone is barely a month old and today I got a message telling me my phone can't backup anymore because I am out of iCloud storage. I am wondering if that is because all my pictures are stored multiple times. Does iCloud automatically backup what is on my phone AND what it on my MacBook to iCloud?

This is a community forum where users exchange experiences, not a center for consulting Apple experts. Maybe no user who understands how Google Photos interacts with iCloud Photos has read this inquiry.

I also don't know how Google Photos affects the situation, but iCloud Photos syncs (which is not the same as backing up) photos from your iPhone if that is enabled, from your Mac if that is enabled, from your iPad if that is enabled, and among all of the devices on which it is enabled. That last part -- syncing among several devices -- is really the primary function of iCloud Photos.
