Installed Google system extension

You must have given them authorization to do so. Any time you enter your password to install software, you give that developer full control over your computer and all of your data. Depending on various factors, that control can extend to all of your devices and all of your data in the cloud.

You should probably investigate more thoroughly. I'm not aware of Google using any system extensions, but then I don't use Google software, at least not locally.

If Google is using a system extension, you have to be very, very careful. If you try to uninstall the software incorrectly, it will bake that system extension into the operating system and you'll never be able to remove it or control it.

Furthermore, 3rd party developers have repeatedly proven themselves to be unwilling or unable to properly uninstall system extensions. If you do have a true system extension, the only way to remove it is to drag the containing application to the trash. You will get a confirmation dialog that you are uninstalling the system extension.

There is a slight possibility that they could have their own uninstaller that work. Technically it is possible. But in practice, uninstallers rarely remove system extensions. Any other uninstallation method, command-line, "app zapper", "clean up" tools will fail and leave the system compromised. You must locate the containing app and drag it to the trash. Note that the containing app may be located in a hidden directory. And said hidden directory will not show up in a file search.

4. WHY did the OS just go ahead and install something WITHOUT authorization?

It didn't. Your 3rd party software did.

The longer I think about this, the more I think this may be a case of mis-remembering or perhaps mis-translation.

A system extension is a very specific type of file. That may not be the issue in this case. Your problem may be identical that the problem described in that other thread.

I have to admit, modern versions of macOS are very impressive. They are practically unsupportable.
