ONT to AirPort Extreme without ISP router

Hi all,

Long time listener, first time caller here, so please go easy! And any info/knowledge y'all have to share would be much appreciated.

In short, I currently have UK fibre to my property set up like this:

Fibre from street to house > Optical Network Terminal > Vodafone WiFi router

What I'd like to do is remove the Vodafone WiFi router and replace it with a 6th gen Apple AirPort Extreme so we have:

Fibre from street to house > Optical Network Terminal > Airport Extreme

However when I do this, I'm not getting any internet connection (despite entering the relevant PPPoE credentials), and the AirPort Extreme isn't picking up any IP address. If I keep my existing setup, and connect the AirPort Extreme to the Vodafone router, it does connect to the internet.

So my question is - can the AirPort Extreme connect directly to the ONT and replace the wifi router? I thought the ONT acted as the modem, and the Airport could act as the Vodafone WiFi router. Or do I need additional hardware between the ONT and AirPort Extreme to make it work?

As expected, Vodafone are no help with 3rd party routers, and Apple tried to help me but couldn't (tech appointment with them on Friday to check the hardware).

Anyone with network knowledge who could help would be massively appreciated!!

What happens if you connect the ONT directly to a Mac or PC using an Ethernet cable? (Turn off the Wi-Fi on the computer to test).

If there is also no Internet connection this way......as I suspect.....this tells you that either the ONT has been configured to only work with the Vodaphone router......or....there is a special setting on the Vodaphone router that allows it to interface with the ONT.

If the latter.....there is no specific setting on any AirPort router that would allow it to connect to an ONT.

Hi Bob, you're a legend. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and saving me hours of desk research, calls to Vodafone, and a visit to Apple! It looks like I have four choices:

  • Ask Vodafone to modify the ONT (unlikely as they don't even have a phone number to call)
  • Wait for Apple to release an updated AirPort Extreme (unlikely...)
  • Forget about using the AirPort Extreme and continue with the Vodafone wifi hub
  • Keep my new setup with the Vodafone hub acting as a bridge/ handshake between the ONT and Airport Extreme

I think I'll try option 4 for now!

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, Bob.

Hi Bob,

Thanks so much for your reply!!

I tried connecting my 2011 MacBook Pro (with ethernet port) to the ONT directly and, as you suspected, it wouldn't connect to the internet. Vodafone have given me PPPoE details for a replacement router so I think they're open to customers using replacements, but for some reason the AirPort Extreme won't configure to be that replacement.

I've kept my existing setup (ONT> Vodafone WiFi hub) but have disabled the Wifi and used an ethernet to connect the AirPort Extreme to it to use as a wifi router. It looks like the signal at least has to pass through the Vodafone hub to work. Are 'passthrough' (bridge?) equivalents available? Or is sticking with the Vodafone hub as the middle-man between the ONT and the AirPort Extreme the best way forward?

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

PPPoE settings on the AirPorts are ancient.....designed to work with older DSL systems. Fibre was unknown at the time. Apple never updated PPPoE settings on the AirPorts, so you are working with 15 year old technology.

I suppose it is possible that PPPoE could work, but as a I mentioned earlier, there are no settings or adjustments on an AirPort for a fibre connection.

The AirPort will work directly with an ONT provided by Verizon in the U.S., but you have to have a Verizon tech out to get into the ONT to make the modifications. When this is done, a regular Ethernet connection is delivered to the AirPort and the AirPort is set up to Connect Using Ethernet.....not PPPoE.

It looks like the signal at least has to pass through the Vodafone hub to work.

As it stands now, that is correct. I think the real question here is whether Vodafone is able and willing to modify the ONT. Most providers are less than thrilled to do this when asked.

I don't know, but I've never noticed anything like this.

So far, this is the only way forward. The Vodafone will continue to be the "main" router in charge of the network and the AirPort will be configured as a "bridge" to offer Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections to the network.

If you want to go with Option 4 for now, you will have two Wi-Fi networks working at your house. I assume that you want to use the AirPort Wi-Fi, so you can either ignore the Wi-Fi signal from the Vodafone router or turn off the Wi-Fi function on the Vodafone if you can get into the settings on the product.

There might be information about this on a label on the back or bottom of the product.

In general, you have to enter something like 192.168.1.100.....for example only......into your browser and then enter the password for the device to get at the settings.
