cannot delete older photos on ipad

I am trying to free up space on my iPad to accommodate the latest iOS update. I was able to delete a large group of fairly recent photos, but for the older one, upon selecting in the same manner, the trash can is greyed, unusable.

That normally means the photos were synced from a computer.

The only way to remove them, is to un-sync them by de-selecting them on the computer that synced them and syncing again, or by syncing an empty folder.
