GarageBand Recording level is gray and doesn't move

Hi, I have been happily recording with my motu m2 interface to my mac airbook on Garageband for a while now. But now when I turn it on, the track recording level in GB is just Gray and it doesn't let me move it to get any level at all. The input shows correctly that I have m2 inputted. When I unplug the interface, the recording level button is active again. Can anyone please help me with this? Thanks
