I was backing up with Time Machine over night. Woke up and the drive was in. Mac said it was disconnected. It was not. Now, the Mac will only start in safe mode. I can do nothing.

In disk Utility, use the tiny View menu to "show all devices".
Repair each item in order, staring at the top.

if any repairs are made, try running the whole process again to see if pervious repairs help later repairs.
