Not possible anymore to remove download of iCloud files

Hey!

I used to not store large files on my Mac but keep them in the cloud. When right-clicking a folder, the option to remove the local download on my Mac appeared.

I do not see this option anymore. Any ideas what could help? I already tried switching on and off the storage optimization iCloud setting.

Hey, thanks for answering!

I see the difference between backup and sync but all files are stored on my iCloud and I can access them from any device. Why should I consider iCloud only for sync? I see there once was an option to sync files between devices without having to upgrade to the extra storage. But not anymore, I have 2TB on my iCloud...

Why cannot I use it as a backup method as I used to? I would like to avoid any of the other cloud services as I already use them for different purposes than my private files.

Any help or explanations are welcome!
