Can anyone unlock an school ipad passcode?

Hi, I've had an old school iPad for over 3 years. My departure from the school and my experience there were very complicated for me and my family. I set a passcode years ago to limit family members' access. Recently, I found the iPad and want to check for any personal photos or emails linked to it. I’d like to remove these before returning it to the school. I also recall that Apple ID sign-in wasn’t allowed and there were some restrictions. What should I do? Do I need to return it to the school, or is there somewhere I can get help before sending it back?
