All the usb ports on my mac mini are in use, so I need to find either a new backup drive that uses Firewire800 or a connector that will go from Thunderbolt2 to whatever the new drive is. Obviously it needs to be of sufficient speed to allow time machine tio work in the background.

You need to obtain a USB hub/bridge. Make sure you get one that has its own power source. This very important. Then it will allow you to connect the various external deices you have and they should function just fine.
My passport Studio has died, it connects to my mac mini by Thunderbolt 2 and Firewire 800, what can i replace it with as I cannot use usb as they are all in useh
