Why does iCloud move everything on my desktop into a folder within the desktop folder?

I want to sync my mac desktop folder contents with other devices. I followed the Apple support instructions for doing so. Now when I go to my mac desktop, all the items on my desktop are within a folder on my desktop, and likewise for the iCloud drive. It's a hassle to have to open a folder to access the items on my desktop. I want to see the items on my desktop ON my desktop, not in a folder on my desktop. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you inadvertently created this new folder.

The original location of the Desktop folder is inside your <your name> folder inside Users. When you sync the Desktop and Documents folders with iCloud, the Desktop folder is moved to your Mac's iCloud folder, and it is copied to iCloud.com. Here you can see

a file in my Desktop folder which is inside the iCloud folder. You can also see that this file appears on my computer's desktop, as well.

If I understand you, then the only difference is that the only thing that appears on your Mac's desktop is a folder named Desktop. If that's right, then just open the folder and drag everything out to your Desktop.

If that's not what you see, can you be more specific?

You're correct that all I see on my desktop is a folder named desktop, but more precisely it's labeled "Desktop - [my computer name]" I definitely did not create this folder. It was created when I turned on "sync desktop and documents folder" in System settings, as per Apple support instructions.

As I noted, the desktop folder was renamed by adding the name of my computer. So I would guess the reason for adding an extra folder on iCloud drive is if there were multiple desktops beings synced to iCloud. That would make sense. But there's no reason for my mac desktop folder contents to be moved into a new folder on my desktop.

I think the screenshot you showed us does not represent what I am seeing on my desktop. I'll upload screenshots of the my mac desktop and the contents of the icloud desktop folder. Thanks!
