iMessage splitting group conversations into multiple threads

I have an iPhone 14 Pro and a new Macbook Pro using Sonoma 14.6.1. My iMessages are synced through iCloud on all my Apple devices. As of last week, group conversations on my MacBook are splitting into multiple threads. When I create a group text, the replies come back separately. This is not happening on my phone, just on my laptop.

Never been so "happy" to find a shared problem. Thought I was nuts. Yes, on all my devices (which are synched in iCloud) messages are split, a new group forms, and my name gets shown in the new group. I THINK this is only happening when an Android member is in group - not sure. And yes, my Macbook is 14.6.1, and my iPhone and iPad are updated --and of course it's happening on all due to synching (which had worked right for years...). QUESTION: how do we determine if/when Apple addresses this and prescribes a fix? I am not a tech whiz but can do what I'm told, to fix! THANKS

After posting Aug 30, reading more, and making sure that yes, this is only happening when there is Android(s) in the group, I spent an hour on phone with Apple Aug 31. They found no solutions and told me to call my carrier, Verizon--which I will do after this holiday weekend. I think that will be a waste of time. Maybe if enough of us bother Verizon they'll bother Apple...The tech seemed to find it particularly interesting that when the messages split off into new group, the new group now includes my name as a member--which I've seen others mention. I know this post doesn't add much... just wondering if enough of us Verizon folks call, that might get them to be sick of it and work with Apple. Or not.

I'm a T-Mobile customer; just switched back to iPhone and my group text includes only other iPhone users. Randomly, a reply from another person in the group will start a separate group iMessage thread. It's not the same person's phone initiating the issue. I do have iMessage on my MacBook Pro, but I'm not sure I've ever actually used it to message in this group text.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? I started experiencing text splitting problems in late August and spent hours on the phone with both Apple Support and Verizon, but each company blamed the other. The issue seemed to resolve itself after a few iOS updates in October, but it recently started happening again. It’s incredibly frustrating. Initially, I noticed the problem only when using iMessage on my Mac, but now it’s occurring when I send texts from my phone as well.

Hi, Verizon user here. Having the same problem…still…in April 2025. My biggest complaint is that I can no longer mute the chat! No matter what I do, notifications still come through. This all started for me as soon as I completed the last iOS update back in the fall. I have a family group chat with mainly iPhone users and one Android user. Everyone has different carriers (Verizon, T-Mobile and ATT). At any given moment, responses will come through on various threads all with the same group name. The Android user DOES receive messages from new threads that don’t exist, the same as the rest of us. Our group also receives notifications regularly that the name has been changed without any visible changes to the name occurring.

It’s not a carrier issue and it’s not an Android issue. I’ve tried turning RCS on and off with no success. It’s something that Apple has done in the recent update. Any chance Apple has admitted to the mistake and is offering real help to resolve?

In my group's text, this seemed to be resolved for a few months and is now happening again. There is NO commonality in carriers. My group thread has people from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, and at different times the problem has been reported by users on all three. Yes, there are both Android and IPhone users in the group. I don't know if it's related but it seemed to pop up again when the update to 18.5 started rolling out and some iPhone users had updated and others had not yet. Apple, get your act together!

I have 15 ProMax, and my iMessage with 3 other Apple phone users split last year into two different text chains. And at times a message would be sent in one and show up in the other like when iMessages sync between devices….but the two never recombined. Well, it happened again last nite, in a different group message, again with all Apple iPhone users. This is really annoying! Solve the problem please!
