iMessage splitting group conversations into multiple threads

I chatted with Apple today after realizing that this was only happening with non iPhone users being part of the group thread. Despite the common denominator of this happening after the Sonoma 14.6.1 update, their position is that this is carrier-related (I have Verizon). It seems very coincidental that this just started happening within the last week or so, but I am going to try Verizon. Are you all having the same issue ONLY with non-iPhone users?

Just got around to doing my update to Sonoma 14.6.1 this morning, immediately noticed all group chats with at least 1 android user are breaking apart now and it is reflecting on my iPhone as well. My only solution at this point is to reply to android containing group chats on my iPhone only until Apple gets off their butt and fixes this.

I've been seeing the same thing, also just since 14.6.1. As it's only happening on the Mac, I have doubts about whether Verizon will have any idea what to do about it unless they've already been instructed on a solution by Apple.

I notice that on my outgoing messages to a group, only the people I'm sending to are shown as group members, as I'd expect. On the incoming messages, though, those people and myself are shown as group members. I suspect this difference in group membership has something to do with why the messages are split into separate incoming and outgoing threads.

Looks to me like a synchronization problem with macOS rather than a carrier related issue, unless Apple has provided details to the contrary.

This is what's been happening to me (also within the month of Dec. 2024) -- I have a "Fam" chat, all iphones, and for some reason my messages suddenly started making a new chat to my other family members. When I'm on my phone, I only see the one chat within Messages, but when text notifications come in it does show the two separate chats (one with the Fam name, one with no name just all the group members). These two separate groups also show up on my Mac. My sister is getting very frustrated with me but I have no way to make this stop happening lol, because all my messages are being sent from my phone where it looks like it's all the same chat!

I will try the re-naming the new branch on my computer to the same name as the regular Fam group like another user mentioned earlier this month, and hope that fixes things *fingers crossed*

@prairieplant no, I was responding to the person my reply was to. What worked was naming the convos the same then quitting the app. However, a couple days later it un-fixed and the same method didn’t work that time

I’ve seen split threads on the iPhone as well — but only after I’ve replied to them on my Mac. My workaround for the time being is to not use Messages on macOS until this gets sorted out.

We've been having text chats split apart in mixed group chats, iMessage/ Android. T-Mobile users mostly, some Verizon.

Chats were splitting and re-combining randomly, sometimes android sometimes apple messages triggered it.

Not all people see the split, it was only on my phone. (I don't use anything but my phone for chats.)

I just fixed one extended family chat with 9 people. We had named the chat "Fam" but a branch peeled off with the same people in it, no name.

I just named the branch "Fam" then quit and restarted iMessage app on my phone, and voila, all messages went back into one thread again.

iMessage on iMac does not seem to be syncing correctly. I have been having this problem as well. I am only participant in the group with 2 devices. I will get random instances where the thread will say I changed the name when I did not. I will erase the duplicate thread and have to manually sync iMessage on my Mac for a temporary fix. But the problem is ongoing.

I spent some time with Verizon and they did some trouble shooting and might be a coincidence but mine has stopped doing it. Apple is not correct. We are ALL having the problem since updating to Sonoma 14.6.1

Having the same issue on my iPad. I have an iPhone 8 which hasn’t be affected but it’s very frustrating having my texts coming in in different threads with my name now added to it! And, it only seems to be an issue when there is an Android user in the group. Hope Apple or Verizon fix this soone. It’s making it very difficult to keep tract of conversations for work.

Maybe Verizon was the culprit in this. Mine has returned back to normal mixed-OS threading for the last 5-6 days. Does anyone else see the problem resolved or are you still having it? It seems that everyone with the issue was with Verizon, so I am hoping this is resolved.

I just updated to Sonoma and this is happening with me. I do not have Verizon, and this happens in group texts where none of the members has Verizon. So, not a Verizon or even a carrier issue.

Just to lend confirmation here - I too have this happening on conversations that have non-iphone devices texting and also have Verizon as my carrier. If this is a common thread I would love to know if you come up with a solution from Verizon, please.

Is this happening with android users or iPhone user only also. What are the colors that show up after the message is sent(blue or green) there is a Issue that might be the cause did you speak with a T2 advisor /senior advisor ? also is this only happening when in groups
