Why does my HomePod separate from audio that started on my iPhone?

I never ask my HomePods to play audio on their own. I always start the audio on my iPhone and then use Airplay to transfer the playback to my HomePods. After a couple songs, the audio separates from my iPhone and starts being played exclusively through the HomePods. This means that the iPhone can now play a separate audio feed from what's playing on the HomePods, even though the HomePods audio feed started from the iPhone. This means I have to control the HomePod audio from the Home app rather than Apple Music. It drives me nuts and I hate it. Does anyone know how to turn this ridiculous feature off?

If your HomePod has independent access to the content, i.e. it is in your purchase history or iCloud Music Library, then I don't think there is a way to disable this. It reduces traffic on your network and saves the battery on your iPhone. If you tap volume in the control center of your iPhone you can use Control Other Speakers & TVs rather than going via the Home app, though it is probably much of a muchness. You can also get there via the AirPlay menu in Music.
