Again: Notes on MacBook no longer sync to iCloud

iCloud syncing has been reliable for several years. But now, I'm back to the bad old days where iCloud syncing was unreliable and unpredictable. This time it's with Notes who no longer sync between my MacBook and iCloud.

Any updates I apply to notes on my Macbook (Sonoma 14.6.1) are not reflected in iCloud: this is for updates to existing notes, creation of new notes or deletion of exiting notes. As an obvious consequence, the changes are also not reflected on other devices (iPhone) including on devices of family members I have shared them with.

Updates I apply to notes on my iPhone (iOS 17.6.1) however are reflected in iCloud. But those changes are not reflected to my Macbook.

My setting says that syncing on my Macbook is enabled (see the image below). I tried toggling the sync setting. That has no effect. I tried rebooting the macBook. Still no effect.

I'm at a loss about what to do.

Yes it is turned on. I'm using notes a lot to keep information up to date between MacBook and iPhone. I also use them for sharing plans with other family members. The sync mechanism was reliable until is silently stopped working. I only noticed a week or so ago, and looking at timestamps of the notes in iCloud and the same on the MacBook, it looks like the syncing stopped working several weeks before.

I finally got things back working by rebooting the MacBook twice: the first reboot did nothing. So I tried another one just to see, and now syncing between MacBook and iCloud notes works again (and also with iPhone).

I suspect some process related to the sync of notes with iCloud somehow silently crashed or failed. I will they and search the log for clues. I have experienced sync issues in the past with the calendar and contacts. That things can fail is OK - as long as warnings and errors are sent to the user. Unfortunately the motto at Apple engineering is to hide all failures from the eyes of the users.
