Can't Open Pages Document Located in iCloud

My macOS recommended that I store my Desktop and Documents in the iCloud - so I did. Now I can't open a pages document that I use all the time. This level of disfunction is reminiscent of Microsoft.

So, how am I going to get my document back? I see it in Finder on the iCloud - double-clicking does nothing.

What now?

To that end, could you answer the questions that I asked?

Where is this Pagers document? for instance, is it in Documents in iCloud, like this:

Do you have "Optimize Storage" turned on at System Settings>Apple ID>iCloud?

What happens with other files?

What happens if you open this Pages document at iCloud.com?

Keep in mind that "iCloud Drive" is just a folder on your Mac. What's in that local folder is copied to iCloud and is available to other connected devices, and through the web at iCloud.com for when you aren't at your own computer.

If you don't have "Optimize" turned on, then all the files are always kept on your computer. If you do have "Optimize" turned on, then some files that aren't used much may be stored at iCloud and retrieved when you need them. That may take a moment, depending on the internet connection, battery power, etc. But it should be fast and pretty transparent.

I desire to open a Pages document form my macBook as I have done for the last ten years. Due to the failings of Apple's dysfunctional iCloud scheme - suddenly I am unable to open a Pages document. I have no other interest other that what I have just stated in this post. Open finder - double click on a Pages document and it opens. Seems pretty simple - unless this is a Microsoft product.

The document is in the same place that it has sat for the last ten years in my Documents folder. Yes, I have recently turned on *something* as per the recommendation from Apple - to move my Documents and Desktop to the iCloud (as I said in my first post). I probably have optimize on. I don't have or don't see a " System Settings" button. And, I seriously don't care about any of that.

I am only interested in opening a document on my computer that I have been opening for the last ten years.

I'm not interested in troubleshooting Microsoft's dysfunctional products - oh, I mean Apple's dysfunctional products.
