It costs money and time to create the games for you to play and also to continually update the games. Developers are not just creating those for you to play out of the goodness of their heart. If they did not make money, you would not have anything to download. Most games have an option to avoid ads by making an in-app purchase.

If you are looking for games that do not have any ads or in-app purchase, then I would recommend subscribing to Apple Arcade. You have a large volume of games you can then download without any charge and none of them have ads or in-app purchases.

I understand that the ad writers must be paid.

It's not the ad writers who are behind this. It's the people who write the software. They want to get paid for their work, just like you, presumably, get paid for yours. They have a couple of options on how to do this. They can charge a one-time fee for the app. They can charge a subscription fee, usually monthly. Or, they can use ads. Developers can contract with an ad placement service that serves the ads to their apps. The developer has only limited control over what ads show up. And no one serving the ads knows what apps are on your phone (that would be creepy if they did). I have a game that uses ads but also offers the option of paying a one time fee to remove them. I play another one that offers in-app goods if I want to watch an ad. They also sell those same in-app goods (e.g. coins, treasure chests, etc). That's another way to monetize the game.

I do not play games that don't give me the option of somehow opting out of ads. There are lots of games that don't because it can be more lucrative than a one-time payment.

EVEN APPLE ARCADE COSTS $6.99 PER MONTH AFTER THE FIRST MONTH.

And don't forget:

  • No ads on any game
  • No in-app Purchase

You can easily find yourself paying more in a single game with in-app purchases or paying to remove the ads. With Apple Arcade you have none of that along with a vast library of games that you have unlimited access to. The choice is yours.
