Music App version 1.4.6.32 does not display or save playlist changes

This issue has already been reported:

I'm unable to rename or edit any playlist… - Apple Community

Music app - unable to rename Smart Playli… - Apple Community

Mac Music App Not Saving Changes - Sonoma… - Apple Community

Essentially, Music App version 1.4.6.32 has intermittent issues showing and saving changes to playlists and folders. This is mostly in the sidebar, but I have also seen it in the track list itself. If you close Music, you can lose all your changes.

I have some possible workarounds for you, which might help:

  1. You can trigger a sidebar refresh by moving an existing playlist in or out of a folder. There is a point where doing this stops working, and no subsequent changes appear.
  2. Disconnect your iPhone from the computer. Mine is connected by a cable, and unplugging that has solved all the issues, at least for a while.

You might also consider making a backup using Music's Menu > File > Library > Export library ...

For any devs watching, I have an iPhone 7 running iOS 15, which no longer receives updates and might be causing the problems.

Mac Studio, macOS 14.6

It isn't your phone. I have an iPhone 15. It's got nothing to do with the phone. Nice job documenting the various complaints. I've also read that this is similarly broken for Sequoia users. My personal concern is that Apple will only fix this in Sequoia, leaving Sonoma media producers who cannot yet update high and dry. For me, this problem is a nightmare and is completely destroying my workflow as well as my recreational method for enjoying music.

SOLUTION/WORKAROUND: Nope, but I figured out the nature of the problem and a workaround. You must add or pick a playlist image when renaming or creating a playlist (and also most likely folders as well). Since I posted this on various threads, people are telling me that it is working for them. Note that you must do this after a clearn start of the Music app. It won't work on a playlist after trying to rename it without an image.

Thanks for posting this, I'm a DJ and now thinking of saving all my playlists in Rekordbox instead of Apple's Music app. I'll definitely give the photo option a try.

I'm also having an issue deleting a playlist or playlist folder. Once I delete, the sidebar still shows it and won't disappear. I'll try adding an image, then delete to see if that helps. Hope Apple fixes this issue!! Most DJ software doesn't support Sequioa at the moment, so I cannot just update and risk my tracks not playing at live events.
