CarPlay unresponsive after iOS 18 on GMC Terrain

My phone updated to IOS 18. As soon as I connected to my car, it started crashing my entertainment system. It has worked fine for many years and the only thing that has changed recently is the update. It will temporarily play a podcast before crashing. Apple Maps will crash it immediately. I tried to forget the car in Settings:CarPlay. I shut car and phone down. The car has the latest updates. I tried a different USB cable in a different port. CarPlay has been and is still enabled, etc. Is this a known bug? Is there a fix?

Talked to apple engineer for over an hour of trouble shooting and problem solving, we got nowhere. However it is definitely a problem with CarPlay but one that GMC (or your car maker) needs to put an update out to fix.

It was suggested to me to reset my iPhone to a previous iCloud backup with iOS 17 until an update is available. I also found if I play my music and have my map running on my phone but disable CarPlay when I plug my phone into the car, my music will still play (CarPlay crashes without it being disabled and Bluetooth won’t stay connected) so that is something to try for now as well.

I contacted GMC online and was told to call the dealership I purchased the car through to ask about an update and report the problem. That’s on tomorrow’s list! Will report back if I think of it. But so far the best suggestion I have is to contact your dealership as well and hopefully many reports will get them moving on an update!

I have a 2019 Camaro as and after iOS 18 update there is a problem with car play . The system will work for 2 or three seconds then freeze and restart . I can’t believe Apple is not going to fix this . How can I go back to iOS 17. This is terrible . Apple told me to go to my car manufacturer and I did and 200.00 later they said it was a problem with my phone not the car and I need to contact Apple . So when I contact Apple they say it’s not my phone it’s the car . I think you get the picture I’m just getting passed back and forth so frustrating

Same issue. My 19 terrain was at dealership for 2.5hrs: they reboot, refreshed and upgraded everything they could & nothing worked. Definitely an Apple problem. YEARS no issues, just got 16 pro max and car screen is crashing and turning black. In other forums many non-GMC cars have had better luck by purchasing “USB-C to lightening Adapter”. It did not work for me unfortunately. I can listen to music via Bluetooth for now and I pray I don’t crash, while looking at my phone for maps. Think I’ll call apple to make sure I have an official complaint on file.

Again, there is no "crash the head end" command within AirPlay.

If anything an iPhone sends causes the head end to reboot, it is a bug in the head end and the head end manufacturer is the only one that can fix it.

If Apple decides to work around such a bug in the future, it is still definitely not their responsibility to do so.

I've used this example before:

If when asked to add "2 + 3" and the head end properly calculates it as five but when adding "3 + 2" it erroneously calculates it as six, it is not the responsibility of software manufacturers to make sure to only ever add "2 + 3."

Even worse, if the head end crashes when using wireless AirPlay, that means bad actors can create an independent device that will crash GM head ends when activated and they drive near other GM vehicles; this is known as a Denial-of-service attack.

I've now updated to IOS 18.2. And while that version seems to be having some success with GMC vehicles, it's not working for me in my 2021 Miata. After performing the update I told the car to forget the phone and the phone to forget the car. Then I renewed the pairing. And it worked for THAT trip. But once the car is shut down, it will not reconnect manually or automatically on any subsequent trip.

Fortunately for me, cable car-play connection works fine. But that's inconvenient for short drives with multiple stops. As a recap, wireless car-play worked fine with all updates until 18.0. And has never worked since. And yes, I have the latest firmware in the media head from Mazda.

GM told me I needed I take it in to get diagnosed…for at minimum $250 with no fix guaranteed.

For anyone curious, I did also contact for an off-market stereo replacement and apparently Terrains have one of the few stereos that cannot be fitted for any other stereo!

So unless Apple and GM decide to do the right thing with getting numerous complaints…we have essentially said goodbye to CarPlay lol

2019 GMC terrain - same!! I’m thinking of reverting back to the previous iOS. Doesn’t do this with my friends who haven’t done the update yet. My car is updated with all of the updates. I’ve also done a factory reset on my entertainment system. I can’t use my maps, make calls, nothing without of it shutting it all down and rebooting. Sucks when I need my gps and I can’t use it or call for help without disconnecting it from the car even then my phone at time freezes too.

I had to go to the Apple Store bc the tech on the phone couldn’t help me. They said you can’t revert back to the 17 anymore and when I tried they had to reset my phone back to factory settings bc it kept crashing and wouldn’t let me do any thing. Honestly this is the worst update and apple should have done more testing before sending it out.

No, I do not; in fact no one here not specifically identified as an Apple employee works for Apple.

Decades of software experience is what causes me to say what I do.

For example:

Say the head end has a bug where if you add 2 + 3 it calculates it as 5, but if you add 3 + 2 it is calculated as 6.

It's not Apple's responsibility to make sure their software never tries to add 3 + 2, even though they didn't in a previous release.

As I said, there is nothing in the CarPlay spec to tell the vehicle head end to reboot, so if anything the phone can send does, it's a software bug that must be fixed by the manufacturer.

Worse, now that it is known something can cause it to reboot, that's a security issue known as a "denial of service" attack. Researchers can duplicate the sequence causing the issue and force your vehicle's head end to reboot continuously whenever they are in range, as it can be exploited wirelessly.

Welp 18.1.1 on phone. Car is updated. Same thing is happening as before. If the map is going and music playing or I get a phone call/text. Here comes the reboot for the GMC terrain - black screen or the car is stuck on one note of a song that sounds like it’s skipping. HOPEFULLY the 18.2 comes out sooner than later I don’t have a GPS and that stinks when they are on your phone plus I hate listening to the radio. Plus safety hazard. Really starting to hate CarPlay.

I’m in the same boat! I updated to 18.1.1 before Thanksgiving, and now my CarPlay freezes and shuts down my entertainment system. I tried turning the car off and on again and tried turning my phone off and on again but no such luck. I get the same results, and let me tell you, it was a little frightening to see my car’s screen go black and hearing my music go silent that first time. I use my CarPlay often, and I’m disappointed and frustrated that this update causes this after having no issues at all previously. I wish I could revert back to iOS 17 because the update is not worth it to me if I can’t use my CarPlay.
