Mac Studio causes monitor on/off flicker with Sequioa

I got my M2 Max Studio a few months back and had no issues with my Dell 6K U3224KB and the incumbant OS. Last week I upgraded to Sequoia and now when I turn it on from being asleep I sometimes get my monitor screen to glitch and turn on/off/on for about a second. It sometimes happens multiple times, separated by seconds or minutes, sometimes no issues for ongoing stretches of time. In other words very random. The same issue whether connected with HDMI cable or Thunderbolt 4 cable. It is not a simple off/on, but the screen spazzes when it occurs... it looks like "a glitch" when it happens. How do I fix? When my monitor is toggled to my Dell work laptop there remain no monitor issues, so I'm certain it is the Studio.

Connected by HDMI cable, the cable must be a certified cable, ULTRA class, and should be short. There is no published limit, but definitely under one meter.

Connected by Genuine Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable, Apple cables up to 0.8 meter are engineered for this purpose. Brand-X cables are strictly limited to 0.5 meter, and not longer.

ThunderBolt-4 cables themselves are not much different than ThunderBolt-3 cables. Unless EVERY device is Thunderbolt-4, you are de facto using ThunderBolt-3, regardless of the name on the cable.

The data rates required are close to the switching speeds of this type of digital logic. The losses over cables longer than spec often cause data errors, and your Mac will stop taking to a display that incurs data errors.

Cables "shipped in the box" are notorious for being 'lowest bidder' cables. - only good enough to keep you from returning the device the first day.

At lower resolutions, the data rate is sharply reduced, so far fewer errors occur. In addition, Windows does not care if there are errors -- that's your problem.

I hear you, this is what I am using: 2.3FT Thunderbolt 4 USB C to USB C Certified Cable, 8K Display/40Gbps/100W Charging Cord. It is currently 2 months old.

  1. DisplayPort differences
    • Thunderbolt 4 – DisplayPort 1.4 (HBR3) supported up to 2 meters with passive cables
    • Thunderbolt 3 – DisplayPort supported with passive cables (less than 1 meter) but active cables (1 meter or greater) do not carry DisplayPort signal and won’t work to drive a USB-C display

Monitor specs for port:

ThunderboltTM 4

upstream

Connect to your computer using the ThunderboltTM cable.

The ThunderboltTM 4 upstream offer the fastest transfer

rate (USB 4 40Gbps), TBT mode and the alternate mode

with DP 1.4 support the following, and PD 28 V/5 A,

20V/4.5A, 15 V/3 A, 9 V/3 A, 5 V/3 A.

Maximum resolution of 6144 x 3456 at 60 Hz (DSC)

The ThunderboltTM 4 upstream power is more than 100W,

the connected equipment and accessory cables should

have fire enclosure of V1 level or higher and VW-1 rating

wire.

This model will feature ThunderboltTM 4.0 technology

and will have a 140W power delivery, it is recommended

for use the following Dell’s products that meet the fire

enclosures.

I brought up "Display" in settings and, interestingly, where I previously had P3 selected for color profile, it now had defaulted to just list the model number of my monitor. I now have switched it back to P3 color profile, not sure if that will do anything.

My monitor cord (currently Thunderbolt 4) does go straight into the monitor from the Studio... just the keyboard and mouse use the monitor as a hub. The Thunderbolt 4 cable is certified and is Anker. Since this is a desktop setup, there is limited cable wear. I also have changed the Thunderbolt 4 port the cable goes into the Studio with to see if that may help.

Thanks for the suggestions... if the issue persists I may need to explore getting additional cables. No issues in the few minutes since I've made the latest changes.

It is not... 1-1.5M. No issues for 3 months, installed Sequoia, then issues every day since, multiple times a day. As they say, there are no coincidences.

But I am clear on your direction, when all else fails, use a short, certified cord directly between the 2 devices. I get it, but that will require me to reorganize my entire desk set-up, so want to exhaust all other possibilities first.

BTW, if Apple designs equipment that can only be used with .5M cords, I may need to go back to Windows or Linux. Unacceptable.

You are welcome to go back to Windows or Linux if they are more appropriate for your uses. The limitation is the HIGH STANDARDS enforced by recent MacOS.

Windows does not care if errors are produced -- its your problem.

ThunderBolt-4 DEVICES can run at higher data rates, but that is ONLY applicable when each and every DEVICE is genuine Thunderbolt-4. The CABLES are the same. Thunderbolt 4 uses a different signaling technique (a modulated signal with multiple bits per signaling interval.)

Sep 25, 2024 11:20 AM in response to teseg265

unless and until you connect a genuine ThunderBolt-4 DEVICE, you get no performance bump for using Thunderbolt-4 over ThunderBolt-3 cables, and are subject to EXACTLY the same limitations in cable lengths as already mentioned.

¿got a Thunderbolt-4 display?

If not, you are limited to Thunderbolt-3 protocols and transmission techniques, and your cables are too long for this use.

My latest update... on another site, someone advised to toggle on in Energy Saver the option to not have a sleeping monitor put the Studio to sleep. Since making that adjustment yesterday afternoon, I have not seen a monitor glitch issue when the Studio comes out of sleep (that I manually put it in), but still too early to claim it a fool-proof work-around. When I manually put my Studio to sleep and bring it out of sleep, no issues so far. I'm not convinced I have a cable issue. I don't think this is specifically a Sleep mode issue, but somehow seems related to auto sleep with my monitor, and maybe Dell monitors or this specific model / 6K monitor? If I have no issues for several days I will undo that energy saver toggle and see if the issue immediately returns.

To close this out... I now have had no monitor glitch issues for a couple days. What appears to be the work around is my manually putting my Studio to sleep vs. using the function of having the Auto sleep enabled when the monitor goes to sleep.

It does not appear to be cord related... specifically, the exact same symptoms occurred whether using an HDMI or Thunderbolt 4 certified cable.
