I want to put my folders with things on icloud

Hi, i have 100gb of folders with data on my external hdd and i want to put them on my icloud but i cant, because my mac always says that it's hdd is low on storage. Is there way to turn off auto downloading everything from icloud to my macbook? Thanks for help.

iCloud Drive is meant to be a synchronization service, not a storage service. Really, the whole point of iCloud is that you are always working with local files and folders. Updating between the Mac's iCloud Drive folder and iCloud's iCloud Drive folder is done automatically by the macOS as needed, and it will do everything it can to insure that everything is kept local. You should probably find another service for off-site storage.
