Is there a way to revert just the Calculator App back to the iOS 17 version?

Is there a way to revert just the calculator app back to the iOS 17 version? I don't like the running calculation if I am adding more than two numbers together and not knowing what my running total is without constantly having to press the equals key. Used to be for example you could add say 1256+2376 and the next time you pressed plus you would have the answer to 1256+2376 displayed before you typed the next number to add to that total. now you just have 1256+2376+....... showing on the screen until you hit equals. SO ANNOYING APPLE!!!

Yes. Go to the calculator app on your screen. When it opens, look at the bottom left corner of the calculator next to the number zero on the left. You’ll see an icon calculator. Tap on that and hit “Basic” and it will revert back to the original calculator.

> Whoever designed the new Calculator app clearly did not understand BODMAS:

Clearly you do not understand either BODMAS (or PEDMAS for those that know it by that name), or the way calculator.app works.

BODMAS works just fine in Calculator.app. In fact, you can write out the whole calculation much easier than in the old version, and Calculator gets it right based on the rules:

I get it, change is hard, and someone's going to complain no matter what you do (have you seen how many complaints there were about the old basic calculator?).

No, it is not a question of 'change is hard'. It is a question of utility and usefulness. To get running totals now, one has to enter '=' all the time during a lengthy calculation while before one could rely upon BODMAS to display the running totals and manipulate the calculation accordingly. Do I really want 200 numbers that don't fit on the calculator screen as one long entry only to find one of the operators was incorrect????

What about recent conversions. I used to use this all the time. Now it is an absolute pain and a many-stage process to do one of my common conversions. Why can't I easily access GBP/USD and metres to inches without a several stage process??????

This calculator app is a terrible retrograde step clearly designed by a non-user of the app.

Apple has made some great decisions over the 40 years I have been using Apple products. They have also made some terrible ones and this one of them.

Any update on this? The new calculator is demonstrably worse; I don’t understand what possessed someone who was in charge of anything to convert the perfectly fine calculator app into this frankenstein monstrosity that has less normal functionality in exchange for weird “look at me I’m different :B look how speshul I am” functions that hardly anyone wants.

I just want the normal quick function calculator back; please roll it back to the previous version or make an alternate version on the app store that we can download instead.

Haha. My previous post was deleted by the masters.

Now, if the option of changing the interface to "reverse Polish Logic" was available, I would jump at it. That's how the HP calculators worked.

Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) is a mathematical notation that places operators after the operands they are acting on. It is also known as Polish postfix notation or postfix notation.

"The reason for the change is that users were submitting feedback requesting the new features."

There are no new features! It is just that the old ones are now much harder to access. Where is my recent conversions menu? I used to use this many times a day. Now it is a prolonged faff to do any sort of conversion, especially my regular ones.

The new calculator is the worst downgrade of Apple software since they abolished Claris/Apple Works.

PCalc is over-the top and does not have the convenience of the old calculator. No doubt some 3rd-party developer will move in to replace the convenience and utility of the old calculator, eventually. Though no one ever replaced ClarisWorks :-(

Do you happen to remember the knock down drag out argument about the calculator app a few years ago about order of operations? Math illiterate comments were made how the calculator was wrong in how it performed calculations and Apple need to fix things ASAP? This was followed by comments from actual math teachers on the long accepted order of operations that the calculator app did indeed follow. The math illiterates simply would not accept the true answer and continued to grind their teeth and caterwaul away.

And don’t even mention RPN! That makes brains explode.

Oh my gosh, yes! It was all over social media that the Apple calculator was "wrong." Hilarious.

I had an RPN calculator in high school. First, just because I was a nerd. Then, I discovered it mean that no one ever borrowed my calculator (and failed to return it).

RPN. If only. Loved my Hewlett Packard calculator.

The worse thing about the new calculator, is how the AC (All Clear) button disappears, so I have to hit delete counters times to clear the window.

If only this company was run by an accountant....

Update - I just discovered one can use the Apple Calculator in RPN mode: Enter expressions using Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) in Calculator on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

Ever hear the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it".....I' been using this BASIC calculator for many decades and now some "Genius" has made it almost useless to me .......it takes much more effort and causes many mistakes just to do simple math.......whoever in your company thought this was a good idea should be fired.....seriously! I now carry another calculator in my pocket......I'm not giving Apple 5 stars anymore!

You're assuming that everyone felt that way about it. Lots of people didn't. And they complained to Apple.

whoever in your company thought this was a good idea should be fired.....seriously!

No one participating in this thread works for Apple or has anything to do with how the calculator is coded.

I now carry another calculator in my pocket......

You could have just downloaded one of the many, many other calculator apps that suited you better. But that would have been less dramatic, I suppose.

I'm not giving Apple 5 stars anymore!

Okay. I don't especially care.

If Apple isn't looking at this thread then what it the point of having it...

This is a user-to-user technical support forum, something that was explained in the Terms of Use to which you agreed when you registered. The more pertinent question is why do people keep complaining in a user-to-user support forum despite the fact it has been repeatedly explained that Apple doesn't read here and that they should use the feedback page.
