Downloaded latest update to my MacBook. On start up, everything on the start page is operating, including password hint, but I am unable to type into the password box as there is no “tick” mark. Tried starting in safe mode, no difference.

I suppose it's a installer bug, some other people also same circumstance they face with.
Try to contact Apple Support and ask about it.
