I’ve been trying to open a book I purchased on Apple Books, however I keep getting an error message stating the book is improperly formatted or is a format that is incompatible. How can I fix this?

Delete it and download again. If that doesn't help ask for a refund: Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple - Apple Support
