My colleague and I keep getting applications pop up in our docks, with a little imac icon in the top right corner. I think it is some kind of casting or sharing process, but we don't know how to stop it. How do we turn this off?

I have similar icons in my Dock with a small iPhone in the top right corner. That is for Handoff. Tp turn that off, see the "Set up Handoff" section of Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other devices - Apple Support and then turn that option off.
