Sequoia latest update wreaking havoc on system

I have just updated my otherwise trusty Mac computer to Sequoia 15.0.1, and am now dealing with a host of new problems right and left on my system. Can you help?

The most glaring symptom is that immediately after the 15.0.1 update, half of my computer's screen became "grayed over" — that is, covered with a block of horizontal lines that did not exist before the update. The block of lines move up and down slightly and flicker a bit.

Please see attached screenshot for details. (I did try taking a screenshot directly from my Mac internally, but this block of horizontal lines does not appear at all on the computer's own internal screenshots. Thus, my taking of this photo with my iPhone externally.)

The block of lines you see in the screenshot do not seem to be interfering with the actual functioning of the computer — I can still do tasks on my Mac computer "under" the block of horizontal lines. But this is definitely not normal and I need to resolve this major problem.

There are a host of other side issues I am trying to deal with as well, like plugging up leaks in a sinking boat: a noticeable lag in the computer's operation, network connection issues, Time Machine backup issues and even the inability to run Apple diagnostics or enter into safe mode online. They all started up right after updating to Sequoia 15.0.1.

What could be the problem here with the display/screen and how can I begin to fix this? Desperately in search of answers here.

Usually if a screenshot does not show the graphical glitch, then it means the problem is a hardware issue with the LCD Panel. However, in this case with flickering video there is a chance a screenshot could possibly take a snapshot in between the flashes & capture a perfect image. Try a screen recording using QuickTime Player. View the Screen Recording on another device or display to see if it shows up there as well. If the issue is not shown by the screen recording, then you have confirmed a hardware issue with the LCD Panel (or possibly internal display cable).

If you have a 2021 iMac as shown in your signature profile, then you could try reinstalling macOS 14.x Sonoma (requires a clean install by first erasing the disk or rather deleting the "Volume Group" followed by installing Sonoma & restoring from a backup).

Since your problem is totally different from the topic we're in you should please read the following user tip, create a new topic in the macOS Sequoia community and restate your question/problem in detail

Also have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac?

This way you'll attract more appropriate responses.

Apple Designed the M1 iMac Apple Silicon Computer to function with whatever version of macOS it qualifies to run, Including macOS 15.x Sequoia

Do doubt, they have Engineered and Tested macOS 15.x Sequoia to function without a Software / System Firmware issue that would manifest this Display issue

FYI for comparison purposes

Running a M1 machine from 2020 ( Headless computer ) , a M2 from 2023 ( Headless computer , and a M3 MBA.

The M1 has gone from macOS 11 to macOS 12 to macOS 13, macOS 14 and currently macOS 15

The M2 from macOS 13 to macOS 14 and currently on macOS 15

The M3 from macOS 14 to current Sequoia

None of these machines exhibit these Lines issue in the Display

HW Tech — Thanks very much for the reply. Following your guidance, I did try to screen-record using Quick Time Player, but once again, the horizontal lines do not show up on the video recording. So, I went ahead and video-recorded the screen externally using my iPhone.

In that external video screen recording, the horizontal lines and the constant flickering — which has become more pronounced as time goes on — is clearly seen. It appears you are correct in assuming that it is an LCD Panel issue. (See other related posts below.)

I upgraded my 16” MacBook Pro from macOS Sonoma to Sequoia a week ago (today is Nov 3, 2024). Immediately after the update, I couldn't log in because my keyboard stopped responding. I took it to the Apple Store, where I was told the keyboard is bad—a hardware issue—and that I’d need to pay $698 for a replacement. I pointed out that even the on-screen keyboard didn’t register key presses from the trackpad, but they seemed unsure how to respond and suggested the trackpad might also be faulty. It was alarming how they insisted it was a hardware issue, claiming the update had no connection to the problem and that my "S" key was damaged. ( it's not!!!) In reality, my MacBook was in perfect condition and functioning flawlessly before the Sequoia update, with no sign of any hardware issues.

After returning home, I contacted AppleCare to arrange for a repair. While troubleshooting, I discovered that pressing Option + Command + R at startup restored keyboard functionality temporarily, which was a relief. All the keys functioned perfectly, and the MacBook began running smoothly. It worked fine for about 3 hours, but then began experiencing keybord glitches and prompted me to upgrade to Sequoia 15.1. Unfortunately, after the update, my MacBook stopped recognizing the keyboard altogether and wouldn’t enter recovery mode, leaving it unusable. Pressing Option + Command + R at startup temporarily restores keyboard functionality. However, the fix only lasts for a short period before the issue reappears.

Also, since updating my Mac to Sequoia, it has started restarting on its own after shutting down.

My MacBook Pro is 2019 16" 16 GB RAM, 1TB. Never had any issues.

It feels as though Apple products are lasting shorter with each new purchase, seemingly reliable only as long as AppleCare is active. The balance between cost and reliability of Apple products has shifted so dramatically that staying with them no longer seems worthwhile.

Since the update to Sequoia 15.1. I have a grey rectagle covering approx. 85% of the desktop. Software windows open on top but files stored on desktop and placed in the middle of the screen are not visible. My second screen does not show this rectangle. If I close the laptop (Macbook Air 2022), the grey box moves over to the other Display.

I tried to take a screenhot, which is not possible. It alwys shows all grey, while there are clearly the trees in hte background, the desptop default picture. This is rediculous!

I’m 100% it’s the OS update. My motherboard was fried within 2 hours of usage after installing Sequoia 15.1. since there are so many issues my laptop was continuously restarting on its own until it wouldn’t power up at all. I relayed this to people at the Genius Bar and they refused to make a note saying i had just installed Sequoia 15.1 and it was only after this install that I began seeing issues. They replaced a few components and all my data is gone bc of Sequoia 15.1.

I bought a brand new Mac Mini Pro and Studio Display two weeks ago. The monitor arrived DOA and had to be replaced. The new one arrived, plugged in the Mini, restored a backup from my iMac. All was well, until I clicked on the waiting OS update. The Mini was totally borked--no boot, no recovery screen, nothing. I sent both of them back for a refund. Maybe I'll buy the set again in six months, after they have fixed some bugs. What. The. Heck.

I have also been having problems with it, including the fans often ramping up when I only have Safari and Music open, sudden freezes for a few seconds, most applications getting the beach ball of death and all round performance as if I'm back on my 2012 MacBook Pro.

I have a fully specced 16 inch M1 Max and should not be getting these kind of issues with such a (once ultimate) machine.

Like many of us (I should have know better to wait longer to upgrade, which is probably best practice) I upgraded too quickly to Sequoia and many things broke. I rolled back to Sonoma, including a clean erase of hard drive after back up with Carbon Copy Clone, but it is not the same now on Sonoma as it was before the premature upgrade to Sequoia. Hard lesson learned, which I had forgotten. I have even considered moving my MacBook Pro to Linux or BSD, but that grass might not be greener at all. I guess patience; I went to Apple after too much Windows disappointments, and it seemed purer with its Unix foundation, but Apple is managing to screw it up too. Too many products from the Valley and the Apple may have lost its focus on superior computing machines with so many gadgets.
