I have had a virgin email account for 25 years or more. i have now been told by Virgin that they are closing my account in 30 days. I use mac mail to read and send my mail from my mac mail. If Virgin close down my account will all the mail that I have saved on mac mail remain intact or will that also be lost.

If your account is IMAP, then all your mail is stored on Virgin's servers and any of that will be lost when they close your account. Copy all your received and sent mail to folders under "On My Mac", export the mailboxes, or get one of the third-party backup solutions such as MailSteward.

Very kind of you to respond. I am a 72 something that is not entirely techwise. I have over 14,000 emails which will take me forever to sort so thought if I could load onto a portable hard drive i could always sort through later. I am not sure how i copy over. any further words of wisdom for this old duffer?
You can, as I said above, export the mailboxes (click the link in blue) and store them anywhere you wish. But you'll have to import them back into Mail to be able to view the messages later. With 14,000 messages, you might want to consider moving them to a third-party database such as the aformentioned MailSteward. It's not free but with that many messages it may be your most practical option.
