iPhone 16 Pro overheating and Battery Drain

I have had my iPhone 16 Pro since day one, and from then my phone has been overheating constantly even after the updates and all the backups have finished processing. This happens all the time whether I’m holding my phone and browsing on any app or if my phone is just sitting next to me it gets super hot without anything going on. I can see this happening normally when using the phone a lot but this is not the case. The phone also drains battery unbelievably fast. It doesn’t matter what’s going on. The phone drains without me even using it at a normal rate I since then have gotten the phone replaced for free by Apple with AppleCare, but after using the phone for a few days the phone still persists with the issue of battery drain and immense overheating constantly is anyone else seeing this issue?

I’m also experiencing the same issue, my phone gets warm and the battery drains very quickly. I’ve noticed that others have mentioned this problem, but I still haven’t found a solution. @dpietrowski2, do you happen to have a large photo library? It might be due to indexing, I guess.

That is NORMAL when you fast charge. If you don’t like it don’t fast charge.

If you fast charge your phone may get very warm, and may pause charging at 80% and display a message saying that charging has paused, and will resume when the phone cools down. This is NOT overheating, and is normal when fast charging. It also won’t prevent you from using any app you have on your phone.

Before the recent iOS updates it also paused at 80% when fast charging, but, as it didn’t display a message unless you actually checked you wouldn’t have realized it. And ALL smartphones pause charging when fast charging, just most of them don’t tell you, as Apple didn’t tell you at one time earlier.

this is what is coming up on my phone as well constantly and just got it January 2025!

Let’s define “overheating”. If an iPhone overheats it shuts down so it can’t be used, and displays a message saying it must cool down before it can be turned on, and it will probably be unusable for an hour or so. If you are seeing this it is a hardware problem and you should contact Apple support:

Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat

If you are not seeing this your phone has not overheated. However, if you fast charge your phone may get very warm, and may pause charging at 80% and display a message saying that charging has paused, and will resume when the phone cools down. This is NOT overheating, and is normal when fast charging. It also won’t prevent you from using any app you have on your phone.

Also, some apps that use a lot of energy or that use cellular data rather than Wi-Fi can cause the phone to run warmer. Worst offenders are Facebook, interactive games, watching streaming videos, and the Camera app.

I completely agree with you; yes, the phone is not overheating to the point where it’s unusable, but in my eyes, it is unusable. I won’t even be using the app and it won’t even be on the charger and it will just “overheat“ or “get very warm”. I have had many iPhones that get warm, however, this phone is getting warm a lot and draining battery a lot when I’m not even using it. I was listening to music earlier today. Did not even have my phone on was just doing things around the house and the battery lost 20% battery in the hour that I was just listening to music that is not right and I have not seen that on any other iPhone that I have had before. Since I sent my first message on here roughly 20 minutes ago, my phone was at 56% since then it is gone down 10% and the only thing that I have done is go on here and checked to see that there was a reply.

A quick update, phone has been on charge for 6 hours and is now at 62% and really hot!
Something’s not right with the 16.

I agree, something is wrong with your phone. Have you tried restarting the phone?

Beyond that contact Apple support.

I charged this phone to 75% and then not used it for 5 hours, now stinking hot and 15% battery left!

By “not used it” do you mean you didn’t get any texts, emails, messages, app notifications or any other normal background activity?

How long has it been since you got the phone or updated it? New phones, and newly updated phones have background processes that are needed to updated databases, build the search database, sync to iCloud and other “housekeeping” tasks. Depending on your connectivity this can take several hours to several days, depending on connectivity and time plugged in. With iOS 18 if you open Settings it will actually display a message saying this is in progress.

The phone is 3 months old 16 Pro and always up to date, Apple replaced the phone after 3 weeks and still the problems occur.

60% drop in battery and no texts, some emails received simply not good enough.

I ended up turning the phone off to cool it down, restarted it and it heated up again immediately - this is not normal, I've had Mac products since 1990 and this is simply the worst product I've ever had from Apple.

Define “very quickly”. If you charge the phone overnight, every night (a best practice), it should not need to be charged until the next night. If it achieves this goal it is not draining very quickly.

And define “fast”. If you charge the phone overnight, every night, and you don’t need to charge it until the next night that is not fast, that is normal.

Lawerence I think you’re just blatantly wrong about this issue. Every response you have makes no sense. I still have pretty unusual battery drain that is atypical of any other iPhone I have had. My phone still get warmer than it should based off all iPhones I’ve had before. Your responses are vague and don’t help anyone with their issues. I would suggest not commenting.

As it is my field of engineering, I am not wrong. But if you can’t accept that then we have nothing further to say to each other.
