others can’t connect to my hotspot. It tries and connects momentarily but immediately disconnects and then they get an error message saying “ could not connect due to authentication issue “ please help! Is this possibly a carrier issue?

Double check the following in the Settings app.
Open Settings ➡️ Personal Hotspot ➡️ Allow others to join: Ensure that this switch is set to ON. ➡️ Wi-Fi Password: Ensure that the those who are joining are using the correct password. You can change the password to something simpler if necessary.
If the above still does not work and does not allow others to join the Hotspot, then contact your carrier and get the issue resolved.
