iMac in Target mode with Silicone Mini

I have an M1 Mac Mini that has been used with a 2012 iMac in target mode. My wife just got an M2 Mini and we had her 2013 iMac downgraded to High Sierra to use in Target mode. I couldn't get it to work so I took my iMac and hooked it up to her mini and it worked fine. I took her monitor and connected it to my Mini with no luck.

I know iMacs in target mode have to be between 2009 and 2014 and they have to run high sierra. Both boxes checked.

Any suggestions how to accomplish this?

If Target Display Mode worked between a M1 Mac mini and any iMac, you got lucky.

2012 and 2013 iMacs support Target Display Mode using Thunderbolt input. You'd need about $80+ in specialized Thunderbolt connection hardware to make a Thunderbolt data connection from a M1 or M2 Mac mini to an old 2012 or 2013 iMac. But there's another catch.

Apple added restrictions on the video source. The source has to be a Mac released in 2019 or earlier, that's running Catalina or earlier. Your M1 and M2 Mac minis are both too new to satisfy these restrictions.

According to Apple support yesterday they said the 202 M1 Mini would work.

That's not what the Apple Support document says.

So as of right now the iMac has the white thunderbolt logo on the screen and the main drive has shown up on the Mini's desktop but the monitor feature isn't working.

Target Disk Mode is a different feature from Target Display Mode. In recent years, Apple has placed restrictions on both that have caused them to become less useful. But using an old Mac that has some form of Thunderbolt as a Thunderbolt Disk for a new Mac still appears to be supported.
