How can I stop downloading files/folders to my computer from iCloud? And how do I manage to which hard drives the files are downloaded?

My iCloud drive is bigger than my hard drive so I don't want (and CAN NOT) download all files from my iCloud to my computer. Where can I manage which folders to download?

How can I remove downloaded folders from my internal hard drive but not from my iCloud?

Where can I chose that certain folders are downloaded/synced to an external hard drive?

Thanks

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.5

Generally, anything in iCloud is also on your Mac. You can elect to optimize storage in system settings > Apple ID > iCloud. If space is needed on your Mac, files will then offload to iCloud only status.

Right-click/two-finger-click on the file to remove download

That is not an option

Thanks

Nope, not seeing this option. I can only move the file to the trash. This would help so much...but it's not there?!

This is a new feature on Sequoia.

Apparently you have Sonoma, so you won't see Keep Download or Remove Download.

It's going to be tough to upgrade with a full hard drive. Apple recommends that you always have at least 10% of your drive free. I've seem things work better at 15% or 20%.

As my wife and I have discussed, there may come a time when you need to either get rid of stuff or get some extra room. (This wasn't about computer files…) You may need to get an external drive to allow you to have room to move around. There are some cool portable ones that weigh about an ounce, so they travel well with a MacBook.

I can not active this. Probably because my hard drive is too full – because **** iCloud downloaded so much from my iCloud drive that my computer is unable to function...
