After upgrade to Sonoma, opening of PAGES docs is VERY slow

On two MacBook Air M2, 2022, after upgrade from Ventura to Sonoma opening of PAGES docs is slow, up to a minute for a simple two pager text doc. Opening of PDF happens instantly.

What could cause this?

Pages version 14.2 (7041.0.109), Sonoma 14.6.1

  • I reassigned that PAGES documents will be open with PAGES as a default in Finder, although it was already correctly assigned.
  • I reindexed Spotlight
  • I reinstalled the entire macOS Sonoma from Recovery.
  • I put a test file into a folder, rather than keeping it on the desktop.

The exact observation is, after a restart and waiting for two mins before I tried anything:

  • Double click on PAGES document
  • PAGES loads at acceptable speed
  • The document opens over a minute later.

Working in a document is normal, a new unrelated doc from PAGES template chooser opens normal.

Hello,

Same issue for me. Updated from Ventura to Sonoma (14.1.7) a few days ago and Pages and Numbers are slow to load and respond and save/rename. Takes about 30-60 seconds to load in a document. I am on a MacStudio M1Pro.

I went to the Genius Bar and they couldn't find any issues and the only solution they offered, was to take to computer for further testing. But all diagnostic they were able to run at my appointment showed no issues.

I have uninstalled and installed Pages/Numbers numerous times, etc..no change. I guess the last step will be to do a clean install.

Right, we have a solution, but we’re not at the end yet.

With PAGES loaded and the aforementioned PLIST file moved to the desktop, the loading time of our test document is 33 seconds. This is slightly faster than before, but still way too slow. The doc is one page, 193 KB. The same happens if we duplicate the document and try with the duplicate.

No new PLIST is being generated.

We also now found that the same problem occurs with NUMBERS files.

We set up a new local user and our PAGES test document loads faster than you can say “Jack Robinson”, i.e. normal.

Is there a way how we can fix the existing user, or do we have to move all settings, docs and everything else to a new user? If the latter, what’s the most efficient way of doing this, because whichever way you look at this, it’s a rather big task.

One last straw… press and hold the shift key while launching Pages. Then open any document and observe the document opening time. The shift key approach prevents Pages from using its last execution state, and maybe a miracle will happen by sidestepping it.

Creating a new user is simple but migrating your existing user data to the new user is H*LL owing to specific current permissions and ownership. I would avoid that at all costs as it will be prohibitively expensive in time and profanity.

Another approach, assuming you have backed up any custom Pages templates from that com.apple.iWork.Pages container location, would be quit Pages, and then move the preceding Pages container folder to the Desktop, and let Pages recreate that container hierarchy the next time Pages is launched. I usually recommend this as the very last approach paying attention to ensuring you have a backup of any custom (My Templates) templates.

Pages v14.2 requires macOS Sonoma or later. Verify that the M2 Mac user has updated Pages to v14.2 as running an older version of Pages on a newer operating system may introduce issues including degraded application performance.

If that M2 Mac is slow to open Pages and is also running any anti-virus application, or the user has run any so-called "Mac Cleaning" application, both should be uninstalled entirely per the vendor's instruction followed by a reboot. Some cleaning applications remove valid files with collateral damage.

The M2 Mac should be booted into Safe Boot mode, then determine if the same Pages document load time changes for the better. If it does, then there is some third-party software that is not loaded during Safe Boot, that is interfering with Pages when one reboots that M2 Mac normally.

After a restart, it may take far longer than two minutes for all of the customary (initial) operating system processes to quiet down. Attempting to open a Pages document when competing with the related CPU and Storage demands by other processes certainly can delay opening a Pages document.

I am using an M4 Mac Mini Pro running Sequoia v15.1 and have Pages v14.2 installed. I have a four-page Pages document with two small images mixed in with the text. After 10 minutes from a boot/reboot, I can double-click on that Pages document and it is opened in under 2 seconds. The file is on my Desktop.

Pages is the only application that can open Pages documents in their original formatting, so no need to set any default application for that purpose. Alternatively, the current LibreOffice 24.8.3 can open Pages documents containing only text though it cannot edit them, so of limited usage.

@VikingOSX Thank you for your thoughts. After the upgrade we waited three days before we concluded that there is a real problem (i.e. to give Spotlight re-indexing enough time).

Whilst we did wait two mins after restarting in yesterday's test, we also have numerous tests where the MacBook had been on for hours already. We also had a look at activity monitor and can confidently say that there is absolutely nothing that would hog CPU cycles or any massive I/O to/from the SSD. These effects, if they existed at the time of test, would also affect other opening of files (say PDF) but they don't.

The reason for resetting the default app is based on the idea that so many things in IT need to be redone, in exactly the same setting as they clearly were before, this can solve many a problem. Unfortunately not for us.

Our own experience with typical opening times for PAGES docs on a number of different Macs (all M series CPU) matches yours. The user of the M2 MacBook Air in this case had no problem on his previous Ventura.

What's next?

Update to Sonoma v14.7.1. This is on your System Settings > General > Software Update panel. The first entry will likely be the current version of Sequoia v15, but as you scroll down on that panel, you will see a hyperlink stating another update is available… When you click that link, you are presented with entries for the current version of Sonoma 14.7.1 (as of this post date), and probably Safari 18.1 too. Only these will be updated without an upgrade to Sequoia. That process may clear out System caches, update frameworks, and rebuild certain system databases that both the operating system and Pages reference.

Once you have done the first paragraph. Try the same Pages document, and any other random document to determine if slow loading continues.

Avoid survey questions in the communities as the Terms of Use discourage it.

I have run Pages v14.2 on both Sequoia v15.0, 15.0.1, 15.1, and now v15.1.1 without any appreciable lag in opening documents. It takes under 6 seconds to open a 179-page Pages document from my Desktop, and I find that acceptable. That same document exported to Word and opened in MS Word v16.91 takes about 8 seconds because Word is a much larger application.

I have the same problem with a Mac Mini M1 running Sonoma 14.7.1. Pages and Numbers (14.2 for each) are slow to open and both of them do not show recent documents like they did before this OS upgrade. I have followed all suggestions here to re-populate recent documents in both progs and still get the same results. This problem even occurs when I boot in Safe mode. I'll post an update when I find a solution.
