Macbook Pro A1708 spacebar key not working at edge of key

I saw these had a service program which recently expired. My keyboard still mostly works except that the spacebar will only function properly when you press it in the center. I purchased a replacement key and butterfly mechanism and installed it. I found instruction videos and the installation seemed fine. The odd thing is the key seems to have no travel anywhere but in the center of the key. I could see where the old butterfly mech was missing some pivot poles which had likely snapped off over the years (or perhaps when I removed the key itself). The only other thing which seemed possible is the butterfly came off the little hold down pieces when I pressed the key in but since I can't see it's tough to tell. I'm hoping anyone else had this same symptom. The key doesn't stick like many other trouble posts. The top of the key appears level with adjacent keys (appears to be in correct position). The only other odd bit is when removing the key, the butterfly clip remains stuck to the key top instead of the hold-down clips.

I'm annoyed Apple ended that service program. I wasn't aware it existed or of course that it would soon expire. Just my luck it expired before my keyboard broke.
