Create an iCloud address to become new primary address on Apple Account

Hi, I've read the articles and they are confusing. I understand I can't 'repurpose' an existing iCloud email address as it's already associated with an account, so how can I create a new iCloud email address purely to become my new primary email address without me creating a new Apple Account?

Do so

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  2. Tap iCloud Mail (or Mail), then follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. If you don’t see onscreen instructions after turning on iCloud Mail on your iPhone or iPad, you already have a primary iCloud email address.

But, make sure that you might need to wait 30 days before you can make this address your primary one

Thanks but yep, I understand that, what I’m trying to do is to change an Apple Account with a non-iCloud address like name@stuff.com to name@icloud.com on that same account to ensure account settings, purchase history, contacts etc stay in place. I can’t use an existing @icloud.com email as that is created and associated with its own separate Apple Account.

At the moment it seems the only way to change that name@stuff.com address is to go with another provider address like name@gmail.com rather than have the option of purely creating an iCloud email address to use with an existing Apple Account….
