When I try to connect my MacBook to my iPhone, the iPhone can detect the MacBook, but the MacBook doesn’t recognize the iPhone. How is this possible?

If you were talking about AirPlay (as opposed to iPhone Mirroring), some Macs could serve as AirPlay Receivers, allowing you to display photos or video from an iPhone. But the iPhone could not act as an AirPlay display for the Mac. The Mac would not recognize the iPhone as a possible AirPlay display.
