iMac - maximum memory?

Can I install 4x32GB memory into my iMac 27", 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i7 ?

It currently has 2x16GB for a total of 32GB, but since I am buying memory I thought I might as well remove those and max it out.

I believe that the 2019 models only allow 64GB but the 2020 models go up to 128GB. How can I tell which mine is? The Apple Check Cover links don't give me that detail when I search with the serial number.

You can use System Information which will link to instructions for installing additional memory.

(Apple menu) > About This Mac > Memory > Memory Upgrade Instructions

Or, Install memory in an iMac - Apple Support.

As an aside, you might want to determine if your Mac would actually benefit from additional memory. Read Check if your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor - Apple Support. If its unitless "memory pressure" graph never turns yellow or red, then buying more would just be a waste of money.

Despite deliberate efforts to tap out its resources bordering on the absurd, I have never seen my i7 Mac actually use any more than about 25 GB RAM.

But... you can never have too much memory, and if you want to install more you certainly can. MacSales will even offer to buy your existing RAM (I think).

I How can I tell which mine is?

To stop the  menu in the upper left hand corner of your screen and select "About This Mac".

That will tell you which model you have. And both the 2019 and 2020 will take 128 of RAM. Apple only tested 64 GB on the 2019.

Yes, 4x32GB should work. Apple sold that model of iMac with 128GB of RAM back then. But be sure you get RAM certified for use in a Mac. Macs are picky about RAM and a "generic" RAM module may not work or would be erratic. I generally recommend the RAM from OWC (aka MacSales) since they're Mac experts and can usually be counted not to sell compatible modules.

Thanks. MrHoffman. I missed the autocorrect error amid the all-too-frequent stalls when trying to edit a post here in the Community. I most definitely meant to say that OWC can absolutely be counted on to sell properly Mac-compatible memory modules, and did not mean to disparage them in any way. I've had nothing but good results with anything I've purchased from them.

Regards.
