My iMac is not registering the Magic Mouse clicks accurately

I've been going crazy for a number of weeks now. When I go to click a link, or anything, something else will open up, triggered by my click. It's as if my iMac is not registering the mouse clicks accurately, so it's clicking a bit lower than the mouse pointer is showing! It's not just happening in one browser, nor with only my Mac mouse, but any mouse I use! Which leads me to surmise it's an error in how the clicks are received by the OS.

Does anyone have a clue as to why this might be happening, and how it can be fixed? I'm so sick of everything opening but what I've clicked on.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

If the problem goes away in Safe Mode but returns when you reboot into normal mode you have some software that is causing the problem.
