It's possible the lens is dirty. You can find CD lens cleaners on Amazon and many office supply stores. Depending on how old it is, it's possible it had a hardware failure.
Do you have the drive plugged directly into the iMac?
Example CD Lens Cleaners on Amazon.
You said "it used to work" in your original post. What used to work? An older USB Super Drive? Apple has recently stopped offering the SuperDrive on the website. It's too out of date.
If it's been less that 15 days since you purchased it take it back to Apple for a full refund and get a self powered, drawer loading optical drive from OWC (MacSales.com). They work fine on all Macs.
In the USB port
Brand new disc. Just came out of the wrapper
Never played before Just unwrapped.
I'm not sure I understand. You said it played before but now you're saying it was just unwrapped?
Maybe you misunderstood what I was saying. A CD Lens cleaner doesn't clean CDs, it cleans the lens inside the SuperDrive.
