About availability of TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps in the United States

TikTok and ByteDance Ltd. apps are no longer available in the United States, and visitors to the United States may have limited access to features.

Apple is obliged to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates. Pursuant to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries — including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others — will no longer be available for download or updates on the App Store for users in the United States starting January 19, 2025.

The following are some of the apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries that are affected:

TikTok

TikTok Studio

TikTok Shop Seller Center

CapCut

Lemon 8

Hypic

Lark - Team Collaboration

Lark - Rooms Display

Lark Rooms Controller

Gauth: AI Study Companion

MARVEL SNAP

If you live in the United States

If you already have these apps installed on your device, they will remain on your device. But they can't be redownloaded if deleted or restored if you move to a new device. In-App-Käufe und neue Abonnements sind nicht mehr möglich.

Users in the United States won't receive updates for these apps, which could potentially impact performance, security, and compatibility with future versions of iOS and iPadOS, and some app functions might become limited or stop working since the app can't receive updates.

If you're visiting the United States

ByteDance's apps remain available for download in all other countries and regions where they are available.

Users visiting from outside the United States with their Apple Account set to a country or region that is not the United States are unable to download, update or make in-app purchases and new subscriptions inside ByteDance Ltd. apps while within the land or maritime borders of the United States.

After leaving the United States, you'll have access to all functionality.

You should know by now that Apple has nothing to do with the law that was passed by Congress. You posted in an Apple Support site and all they can do is follow the law passed by your Congressional Representatives and upheld by the Supreme Court. I would think that is who you would want to talk to.

Wait if I was to get a new apple phone and transfer all my stuff to the new phone, would tiktok be there, seeing as I have tiktok on my old phone?

Nope! Transferring contents from one phone to another does not actually transfer the app. All it does is transfer a list of apps that need to be downloaded on your new phone. After you set up the new phone, it will attempt to download the apps you had on your previous phone. If the app is not available, such as TikTok, it will not be downloaded.

Mrs. Carol, you work for Apple? I ask because I wanna know about the error, bug or thing that doesn’t allow to have TikTok

It is called US Law and was passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court. You have a very loose interpretation of what you call unbanned, as that means you can only access it on the web or a previously downloaded app. Consider this:

  • The law Congress passed placed a $5,000 per user fine on both Apple and Google for each download or redownload of the app.
  • TikTok is not available in the Google App Store either for that reason.
  • Congress has NOT repealed the law.
  • The Supreme Court has NOT ruled that the fines can be eliminated.
  • The law still requires ByteDance to sell to a US company. Currently that has not happened and there is no guarantee that it will. There is only about 58 days left for that to happen.

You may want to consider the source of where you get your information if you did not understand. You also may want to contact your Congressional Representatives as they passed the law. Do you know who they are and how they voted? There is also quite a bit more information provided here for you to read. Knowledge is power, so you no longer need to think it is some kind of bug or error.

It is not going to happen. That would require Apple to break the law passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court and face financial consequences. The same is true for Google too and why it is not available on the Google Play Store either.

Apple does not delete your apps. You may optimize apps that are infrequently used which will offload those apps to be downloaded again. Alas, Tik Tok is banned in the United States and cannot be downloaded.

Hello, I had an issue with my bank a while back that ended up reflecting a large negative balance in my account... however I worked with the TikTok support team for many days and spent a lot of time to get the issue resolved, which it indeed was...yet the issue has now resurfaced and I'm unable to promote any videos and my payment keeps failing.

Please fix this for me immediately! I have many reasons and proof of substantial

"fraudulent" over-charges against my account as well in numerous, numerous, cases, and so I am hopeful this will be resolved in a timely manner especially considering I was and have been still willing to spend money via TikTok...l also had a $100 product I purchased off the shop that I never even received nor was able to get a refund for, and the company DISAPPEARED. Help.

Many thanks,

I don’t know why you posted this because there’s nothing Apple can do for you at all. Your issue is with your bank and TikTok. Both Apple and Google are barred by federal law from allowing TikTok to be downloaded from their app stores. However, for the time being, you can access your TikTok account by using a web browser like Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc. Have you tried that yet? But be aware that eventually TikTok could be shut down completely in the U.S. You might want to look into other social media platforms that could fit your needs.

if Android is letting people download it outside of google play, apple should do the same. #endrant

Blathering nonsense. Get your facts straight before spreading disinformation. And if an Android user manages to download the TikTok app from an unauthorized source or third party app store that copy is likely loaded with malware and keystroke recorders. The scammers are always looking to take advantage of user ignorance.
