Air Port time capsule isn't backing up

My time capsule has faithfully updated for years without fail, but lately it will not back up and I do not know why. It gives me this message: Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Data” Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this?

OK, thanks for the update.

It was either corrupted backups or a failing hard drive. The Verify Backups check confirmed that the backups were corrupted, so the old file had to be erased and a new backup was created.

Hopefully, things will run smoothly now.

Please hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the Mac's screen.

Click on Verify Backups and run the check.

This check might take anywhere from 5-10 minutes up to 60+ depending on how much data is stored in the backups. Let the process run until it completes......or.....until you see an error message

You will be notified on screen when the check is complete.

Post back on your results. If an error message appears, post back with the exact text of the message.

Please Shut Down your Mac and then pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule

Wait 30 seconds, then start up the Mac and let it run a minute

Then, power up the Time Capsule again and let it run for at least a minute

Try the Verify Backups diagnostic check described above again and report on your results.

Unfortunately, if the diagnostic check cannot run, this is a sign that the Time Machine backup files have become corrupted and are no longer usable........or......the hard drive inside the Time Capsule is failing.

Open AirPort Utility on your Mac (Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the Time Capsule, and a smaller window will appear

Is there a setting for Status? If yes, what is the message next to Status?

Next question(s).....Is your Time Capsule "tall", like a "tower"? If yes, you have the "tower" version

Or, is the Time Capsule "flat", like a small white pizza box with rounded corners? If yes, look on the bottom of the Time Capsule for the model number, which is probably embedded in the foam pad base. The model number starts with an "A" followed by 4 numbers. Example......A1409

If you have the "tower" version, just say that you have the "tower" model. If you have the "flat" version, please post back with the Model Number that you see on the bottom of the device.

Sorry for all the questions, but we can't "see" your Time Capsule or your computer screen.

Were you able to run this check that we detailed above?

  • Open AirPort Utility on your Mac (Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)
  • Click on the picture of the Time Capsule, and a smaller window will appear
  • Is there a setting for Status? If yes, what is the message next to Status?

If the hard drive is failing......you will see a message that reads "internal disk needs repair".
