Apple Music service and music library in 2025

I have heard all kinds of horror stories out there but in 2025 what really happens. In my apple music app I have all kinds of music that I have added over years and years. Some records some cds some purchased on iTunes and some I made myself. Also I have many different eclectic artists recordings from around the word. Sooooo when I join Apple Music monthly pay service what happens to my music library? Am I essentially offering up my whole collection to Apple for free?

How much music is stored on my device when I use Apple Music. Is there a choice to listen vs download when you join Apple Music?

If i decide to leave Apple music will I get back all my previously loaded collection?

Officially, an Apple Music subscription does not interfere with your local library. But (as you point out), "horror stories" have occurred. Make a backup before you begin.

One way to mess up your local library is to replace a local copy with a lossless copy from the subscription. Then when your subscription ends, you got nothin'. Other mess-ups are possible. Make a backup before you begin.
