sequoia 15.3 file search function not working

I updated my MacBook Air (M2) to sequoia 15.3 yesterday, the search function fails to identify relevant files either by file name or keyword even when searching specific folders.

Sequoia 15.3 Update: It's been like this since Sequoia was launched in late 2024



SO MANY USERS effected


It's a fundamental function of Apple System software.


After countless phone calls, 3 Apple cases reports & posts.



STILL no FIX


Apple still can't prioritise their dedicated customer base.  


Continuing Poor  Customer Service

How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac

If searching your Mac doesn’t return expected results, rebuilding the Spotlight index might help.


  1. Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Spotlight.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Drag the folder or disk that you want to index again to the list of locations that Spotlight is prevented from searching. Or click the Add (+) button and select the folder or disk to add.
  4. To add an item to the Privacy tab, you must have ownership permissions for that item. To learn about permissions, choose Help from the Finder menu bar, then search for “permissions.”
  5. From the same list of locations, select the folder or disk that you just added. Then click the Remove (–) button to remove it from the list.
  6. Quit System Preferences. Spotlight will reindex the contents of the folder or disk.



If still not working...


Start with this of M1 or M2 Mac...


On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.

Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.

Select a volume.

Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.

The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.


Restart normally.


Manually Rebuilding Spotlight via Terminal

If the aforementioned Spotlight control panel approach doesn’t spur a reindexation of the drive, you may need to initiate it manually through the command line. Open Terminal and use the following command string to do so:



This basically asks for temporary super user status, which is why Terminal may ask you for your password (it may not if you’ve used a sudo command recently or are already logged in as a super user or root. The command asks the unix tool mdutil to reindex the spotlight database for everything on the computer, including external drives, mounted disk images, etc. To re-index only for a specific drive, use the /Volumes path. For example, for an external drive named “MiniMe,” the command would look like this:


sudo mdutil -i on /


Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line.


If still need be…

Open Terminal and run each of these one at a time


/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user


sudo will ask you for an Admin password that won't be echoed.

Carefully type your admin password when asked & hit enter.


sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network


killall Dock


sudo mdutil -E /


sudo mdutil -i on /

Upgraded to Sequoia 15.3.2 and Search in Mail and Safari Technology Preview > History are basically disabled. When I enter a search term and hit enter, absolutely nothing happens... Apple Mail search is already pretty useless, but for it to stop working completely makes using Mail untenable...

Everyone--please go on the support page support.apple.com and leave your feedback directly on this "failure to search" debacle. Maybe if enough people do that, they will find a fix.


Another upgrade nightmare this morning: They have totally changed Calendar with the latest updgrade--which I tried to stop but it uploaded without my permission. The new Calendar is awful IMHO. What is going on over there??--they are trying to make Windows look good it seems.

Hello All


After doing an update from Sonoma 14.7.1 to Sequoia 15.1.1, then 15.2,15.3 and now 15.4, the finder/Spotlight is not

working.

After reinstalling Sequoia Software twice and 5 phone consults, 6 case numbers, and PROVIDING DOZENS OF EXAMPLES, plus visiting the Apple Store Genius bar.


The problem of the Finder and Spotlight not searching correctly and picking up all

Folders and Documents on a one-word search?


I have been told I have to wait for a Sequoia Software update for a fix


How did Apple get it so wrong, a fundamental practice for decades?


Apple should look after its customer base.


You could almost initiate a class action for inadequate customer service, especially since the product claims to offer specific features, but it fails to deliver.
