I can't open my trash icon when double-clicking it to open nor will it open when right clicking.
It's showing there is "trash" to be emptied but I can't review what is in the "can" nor, as noted, empty it.
Any clues? . . .

I would restart the computer in Safe Mode. Press the Shift key on startup. This can take some time, so be patient. The OS is cleaning its caches and repairing itself. Then try emptying the Trash. Finally, restart normally.

After "Force Quit" the Finder and restarting, I am now back in business. Finder opens and no items in trash.
I ran the utility "CleanMyMac" and it cleaned out the trash. Problem still is the Finder won't open when clicked.
See this note:
NOTE: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I am not able to startup in Safe mode. I am holding the shift key down but the startup routine is bypassing it and simply sending me to my regular login.

You'll get this in the upper right hand corner of the screen if you're on the right track:
I have "Safe Boot" but it's in BLUE and my screen alternates from Grey to Black. Is this correct?
It's been doing this for a few minutes now . . . maybe 5 or so . . .
I exited out of this, logged back in and noticed I can't open the Finder by double-clicking. I have to right click and open a "new Finder Window."
That's because the system running at the time of the screenshot was an older system with pink in it's wallpaper.
Have you reached the Desktop in Safe Mode or are you still in the login window?

Trash Icon Not Opening Nor Deleting
