Apple changed the drive format almost every year for several years. You need to post clearly exactly what model your surplus drive came out of, and exactly what Mac you would like to put it into.

in most situations, such a transfer is impossible, because the drive format changed from year to year.

OWC/MacSales (and almost no one else) sells some external adapters for some removed Apple drives.

Of the USB-C Apple laptops, only the MacBook Pro 13" 2016 & 2017 non-touchbar models had removable SSDs. However, I would advise against purchasing an Apple OEM SSD because those SSDs have an extremely high rate of failure.

OWC does sell a drop in replacement SSD for that model laptop:

I personally do not recommend spending any money on any of the Intel USB-C Macs for multiple reasons since they have multiple known design/manufacturing defects while this particular model has some lesser known issues, plus many of them are no longer supported by Apple & others will soon lose Apple's support. The money spent repairing/upgrading these Intel USB-C Macs is much better put towards a new laptop.
